Volunteer to Teach Chess at Elementary School

Student Mentor Volunteer Opportunity For Chess Literacy with 1000 GM

High Schoolers - Earn Community Service hours!

1000 GM is bringing chess literacy to kindergartners, first graders and Elementary School Students for free in schools in Elementary Schools across the US. The program consists of 12 weekly sessions to 32 kids on the weekend.

1000 GM is looking for Student Mentor Volunteers to assist with our Chess Literacy Program.  High School students can earn Community Service hours by volunteering as a Student Mentor for four to sixteen hours per week on the weekend.

The work will translate to a very compelling college application essay on how the high school volunteer demonstrated leadership and gave back to the community.

How To Apply:

We have very limited spots available. Please apply by sending an email to [email protected]. In the email, please mention the following:

  1. Your past volunteer experience
  2. Your experience with teaching. (Babysitting counts!)
  3. Which Elementary School you will be teaching.
  4. What do you want out of this volunteer position? (Community Service hours? Experience? A sense of giving back to the community? Leadership opportunities?)
  5. No chess knowledge is required, but please share with us your chess rating on chess.com or uscf, if you have one.

Student Mentor Volunteers will need to sign up with 1000 GM, be approved, and then will be directed to contact their local Elementary School to begin the 1000 GM Chess Literacy Program.

Phase 1 of the Early Chess Literacy Program consists of learning the game utilizing a phone or iPad for 12 weeks and ends with a Recital and Awards Ceremony for the students.

Student Mentor Volunteers are requested to take photos of the children participating in the program.  Release form available for parents to sign.
